Motoko Sakamoto, PhD Japan (2000 - 2004)
Dr Motoko Sakamoto is Professor of Nutrition Education and Dean Wayo Womens University in Japan and visiting professor at Tokyo Metropolitan University and at Tokyo University, School of Medicine. Motoko has had a long career in basic food and nutrition research and applied dietetic research, with an emphasis on nutritional immunology in malnourished children and nutrition education interventions for children.
Dr Sakamoto has been the Official Representative of the Japan Dietetic Association on the International Committee of Dietetic Associations since 1992, and is the Board member of the International Confederation of Dietetic Associations representing the 2008 International Congress of Dietetics to be held in Yokohama, Japan. A member of the Board of Directors of the Japan Dietetic Association since 1994, Motoko is also a member of the International Committee and Editor in Chief of Japan Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics, a scientific journal for members of the Japan Dietetic Association.
Dr Sakamoto's commitment to international nutrition and dietetics is further demonstrated by her leadership in organizing the International Symposium on Childhood Nutrition Education in 1989 and in 1999 and the International Symposium on Activities of Dietitians and Nutritionists Around the World in 1999.
Dr Sakamoto received her Doctorate in Medical Science (Immunology) at Tokyo University School of Medicine, a Master of Science in Nutrition from Columbia University in the USA, and a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition from Kumamoto Prefecture University in Japan. Her research career began with INCAP, Guatemala on immuno-competence of malnourished children. For about 20 years now, Dr Sakamoto has been observing children's health status, especially risk of life-style related diseases and evaluation of nutrition education interventions through health examination.
