The association was founded 1970 in order to improve the employment of clinical nutritionists (dietitians)in Finland . Nowadays the public health nutritionists are also members of the association. The mission of the association is to be an educational and professional interest organisation. The association works to promote development in the field of nutrition and health education. It submits proposals and issues statements on nutritional topics of general interest. Members of the association have a Master of Science degree in nutrition. Part of the members undertake post-graduate research to a doctoral level. Members work in the fields of clinical and community health nutrition, research, consultancy, education, industry and catering services. There is also a student membership possibility for students studying nutrition at the university.
